The way things are going, Henry Cavill won’t be the only big-name star to leave Warner’s DC Extended Universe – he’ll soon be joined by Ben Affleck.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the former Superman actor has favored The Witcher over the Man of Steel, with Warner Bros. now expected to double down on its standalone Supergirl movie in a post-Justice League world. The ill-fated Zack Snyder pic proved to be the final nail in the coffin, then, though according to THR, Ben Affleck will be following in Cavill’s footsteps very soon indeed, giving Matt Reeves free rein to cast his own Caped Crusader for The Batman.
Per THR:
As such, Cavill will join Ben Affleck, who isn’t expected to reprise his role for director Matt Reeves’ forthcoming Batman stand-alone film, as a hero on the way out. [So while] Affleck and Cavill are segueing out, others who were seen together onscreen in Justice League are carrying forward.
Truth be told, ever since it was reported that Ben Affleck had checked himself into a rehab facility, DC fans have come to expect a changing of the guard – it’s really a question of when, rather than if.
So far, Ryan Gosling, Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) and even Oscar Isaac of Star Wars fame have all been linked with the coveted part, though it’s been said the latter is no longer in contention for Bruce Wayne. It certainly makes for a fresh roster of talent from Jake Gyllenhaal and Jon Hamm, who were linked with The Batman‘s titular role some months ago.
Who will be the one to replace Batfleck and launch a new era for Gotham’s Dark Knight? That’s the question on everyone’s lips, and we’ll keep you posted once we hear more.
