We have no one to blame but ourselves – after Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles leapt to the top of the box office with a surprisingly strong $65 million domestic opening, the studio has greenlit and scheduled a sequel, with Michael Bay returning to produce.
If, unlike us, you were a fan of the film, chances are this sequel will keep very much to the newly established tone. Returning alongside Bay are his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick also producing. Also back on board are screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), who’ll simultaneously serve as exec-producers on TMNT 2. It has not yet been announced whether Jonathan Liebesman will be returning to direct.
Adam Goodman, President of Paramount’s Film Group, said:
“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”
Paramount has set the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel for June 3rd, 2016. That has it going up against the animated Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy Sausage Party, which Sony is hoping will be met with This Is The End levels of success. Both films are also opening one week after box office juggernauts X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass.
