Though Tarsem Singh‘s Snow White film can’t decide on an official title, it has released a first look at star Lily Collins as Snow White. EW released this somewhat stylized photo of Collins wearing a gown worthy of a classic fairytale. It also gives us an idea of the mood of the film, and some hint as to what to expect regarding visuals.
Relativity Media’s fairytale pic, formerly called The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, stars the young up and comer Collins (Priest) as the titular character. The Evil Queen will be played by Julia Roberts, and we recently learned that Sean Bean (no stranger to fantasy epics) would play the King. Armie Hammer (The Social Network) is set to play the prince, a character caught in a love triangle between the powerful Evil Queen and Snow White.
Collins has described her character as “a joyful person who lights up a room and maintains grace at all times. She’s a naive, innocent young girl who turns into a woman and really finds herself.” This Snow White will apparently be more of an adventure story, with a deposed Snow White plotting to take back her kingdom from the Evil Queen.
Director Singh’s film work certainly has a visual signature, and if we learnt anything fromĀ The Cell, it’s that we should expect some amazing surreal visuals in his Snow White. The picture gives us a peek at the film’s stylization and art. The image certainly looks like its had some CGI manipulation, but the colors and the dress definitely have a fantastical whimsy that sets an appropriately fairytale-esque mood.
This Snow White film will go up against two other versions around the time it releases next year in March. Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga) stars in the version called Snow White and the Huntsman, and Disney’s also providing an update with its re-imagined Snow White supposedly set in Hong Kong in the 1800s. It’s going to be the Battle of the Snow Whites, and it’s anyone’s guess who will reign supreme come next Spring.
