Taron Egerton Discusses Kingsman: The Golden Circle’s Political Themes And A Possible Sequel

Kingsman: The Secret Service was a critical and commercial hit back in 2014, so the news of a sequel was welcomed by all. With an all-star cast that includes names like Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Julianne Moore, Kingsman: The Golden Circle has all the makings of being even bigger and better than its predecessor, especially with breakout star Taron Egerton set to return.

Kingsman: The Secret Service was a critical and commercial hit back in 2014, so news of a sequel was welcomed by most. With an all-star cast that includes names like Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Julianne Moore, Kingsman: The Golden Circle has all the makings of being even bigger and better than its predecessor, especially with breakout star Taron Egerton set to return.

The sequel is currently eyeing a fall release and the teaser trailer is expected to be attached to the R-rated Logan. While we wait for the first bit of footage to emerge, Egerton has begun teasing exactly we should expect from the follow-up in terms of how it will delve into some weighty political themes in the same way that the original did:

“I think it very much is political. I think I can say there’s a ‘presidential’ thread that runs through the new film. I think that, each time, whenever there’s a new global threat that arises in the world of Kingsman, it will be something that may have genuine relevance. In the first one, I guess we could say it’s over population, and in this one, it’s a similarly pertinent global theme. But I think you’re right. It’s a warped, distorted presentation of politics, but I think the themes are definitely there.”

The actor then went on to share his thoughts on the possibility of a third instalment, and it seems like he’d be interested:

“Matthew is a very much ‘Don’t count the chickens before they’ve hatched’ kind of guy, but he also has a real sense of Kingsman being his baby and he won’t jeopardise it with a crap idea. So it depends what occurs, and whether it feels right to him, but I don’t think for a second that either he or myself, the lovely people at Fox and whoever else is interested in Kingsman, wouldn’t completely love it if this is a continuing series.”

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is Matthew Vaughn’s first sequel and the expectations on it being a success are high from both fans and studio execs alike. Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons only published one volume of this series and the first movie borrowed very little from it, so chances are that this sequel will be an entirely original story. Whether it can live up to the expectations remains to be seen, but with the talent on board, we certainly wouldn’t bet against it.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle will shoot its way into theaters on October 6th, 2017.
