Come December, Michael Fassbender will be slipping into two very distinct roles for Ubisoft and New Regency’s live-action Assassin’s Creed movie.
The first of which is Callum Lynch, a normal civilian from the near-future who finds himself in the clutches of the nefarious Abstergo Industries, undergoing a series of tests which, in turn, open up the second half of his dual role, Aguilar. As you’ve no doubt guessed, it’s the latter character that stands as Lynch’s deadly ancestor, and Assassin’s Creed will thrust Fassbender – and, by effect, moviegoers – back in time to the Spanish Inquisition.
Such a mind-bending journey oozes with cinematic potential, and early reports have teased the film’s sizeable production values – not to mention Ubisoft’s confidence of spawning a bona fide film franchise. And now, a new image has surfaced offering up our best look at Fassbender’s period garb to date.
Undeterred by the recent critical reception to Duncan Jones’ Warcraft: The Beginning, Ubisoft producer Pat Crowley allayed fears that Assassin’s Creed will go down as a flash in the pan, stating, “it’s not a one-off. Everybody expects that this movie will continue.”
Much of that future-proofing will revolve around Michael Fassbender himself, who is on board to star and produce the video game adaptation. He’ll be playing Callum Lynch, a “descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.”
Also starring Marion Cotillard, Ariane Labed, Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson, expect Justin Kurzel’s Assassin’s Creed to swoop into theaters on December 21.
