On the official website for The Dark Knight Rises, an updated synopsis of the film has been released and it reveals some tiny new details on Batman’s upcoming struggle to once again save Gotham. Admittedly, it’s not much different than what we’ve already seen but still, it’s something.
The synopsis reads as follows:
“It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.”
Although much has already been gleaned from the countless TV spots, the update indicates Batman has been out of commission for a while and that Bane will ultimately bring the Bat back. As well, Catwoman’s “mysterious agenda” hints that she may be in league with another rogue or she may cross sides. Who knows? With Selina, anything is possible.
Overall, the synopsis doesn’t give away too much but it does provide some more backstory that can be further speculated. I’m sure comic parallels can be drawn as well; in particular, No Man’s Land and The Dark Knight Returns, which are clearly influencing certain elements of the film.
Either way, all will be revealed on July 20th.
