Over the course of ten feature films Christopher Nolan has garnered the sort of intensely passionate fanbase that you’d sooner see attached to major franchises than single directors. In his own way, the Inception helmsman is a one-man brand, so when the announcement is made that Nolan has another film scheduled for theaters, his followers don’t need any further details to get excited.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is planning to release Nolan’s next feature on July 17th, 2020, and that’s pretty much where the details begin and end. Granted, it’s also said that the film is coming out in IMAX, but we probably would’ve assumed as such, given Nolan’s track record. In any case, we currently have no title, no plot details, and no indication of who else is involved in the project, but it’s probably a safe bet that the movie will be going into production later this year.
The unnamed feature will be Nolan’s first since 2017’s Dunkirk, which landed the filmmaker his first Oscar nomination for Best Director, as well as earning seven other nods from the Academy and three wins in the technical categories.
Incidentally, the third weekend of July seems to be a go-to release slot for Nolan, and one that he’s fared very well in previously. For one thing, it was this spot on the calendar that saw the release of the director’s two $1 billion-plus global grossers: 2008’s The Dark Knight and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. On top of that, it was in this same period that Dunkirk started a run in theaters that saw the film beat out Saving Private Ryan as the highest-grossing World War II movie of all time.
We’ll see if Christopher Nolan can keep this winning streak going when his next film comes out on July 17th, 2020.
