Throughout her long and storied history, Harley Quinn has donned nine kinds of eccentric costumes since first appearing in Batman: The Animated Series, and had things panned out differently during production of Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie may have been sporting a more classical look in David Ayer’s anti-hero feature.
Before settling on the garish hotpants and shiny jacket, the actress revealed that her version of Harley Quinn went though numerous iterations, including the famous court jester guise.
[zerg]Speaking with Hello Giggles in anticipation of Suicide Squad, Robbie revealed that she “cannot emphasize enough” how many costume designs and outfits the production experimented with.
“I cannot emphasize enough how many outfits, and how many variations of the Harley Quinn costume we tried. We tried the court jester costume, we tried the corset and skirt, we tried leather pants, we tried literally every type of costume possible for her. I really love where we ended up. And who knows, maybe in the sequels we’ll go with the court jester one. I think there’s a world of possibilities.”
As much as we would’ve like to see Warner’s rendition of Harley Quinn pay homage to Bruce Timm’s classic series, it’s worth keeping in mind that the look of Robbie’s bat-shit insane criminal had to mesh with her fellow members of Task Force X and the general aesthetic of the movie.
Suicide Squad opens on August 5 – and Warner Bros. is already keen to fire up pre-production on a sequel.
