Once more, fans of a certain age may have cause to rejoice! As we reported not too long ago, director Richard Donner confirmed (via TMZ, so take it with a grain of salt) that he was indeed preparing The Goonies 2, hopefully with the entire original cast back in their parts. Now Donner has also mentioned, once more to TMZ, that original writer Steven Spielberg has come up with a new idea for the sequel.
The Goonies might not be familiar to those who did not grow up in the 1980s, but it has passed into the realm of Hollywood legend. It’s been referenced on shows like Bob’s Burgers, and remembered with fondness by an entire generation for such moments as the Truffle Shuffle, and Sean Astin back before he was a Hobbit. A sequel has always been in the offing, of course, but since the entire cast have grown up and moved on, many to bigger and better things, that notion has always been on the back-burner.
Donner’s renewed interest in The Goonies 2, as well as the possibility that Steven Spielberg will once more be involved, raises the chances of the sequel actually getting made. Some of this might turn on whether or not they can convince the entire original cast, including Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, and Joe Pantoliano, to return to the Goon Docks. That could be quite a tall order, especially when it comes to Brolin, but stranger things have happened.
We must continue to recall that all of this is being told to TMZ, not exactly the most reliable news source. They do have a tendency to browbeat celebrities into telling them half-truths. Nevertheless, if The Goonies 2 does happen, it could be a lot of fun.
As always, we’ll keep an eye on any news of The Goonies 2 and let you know when there’s more solid information.
