Despite taking a bit of a break/retirement from the world of film, it appears as if Steven Soderbergh is ready to dive right back in. He’s already lined up a directing gig in the form of Logan Lucky, which will star Channing Tatum and Adam Driver, and now he apparently has his eye on a project about the Panama Papers.
Right now Soderbergh is only attached to produce, but he may very well get behind the camera as well here. On scripting duties is Scott Z. Burns, a frequent collaborator of the director who has worked with him on films like Contagion and Side Effects, among others. Together, the two make a very strong team and their involvement on this movie alone makes it one to keep an eye on.
Burns will be based his script on Pulitzer Prize winner Jake Bernstein‘s upcoming novel Secrecy World, which tells the story of “the leaking of more than 11 million records and features “all-new details about the Panama Papers, including revelations about the financial machinations of rulers and royalty, the illegal activities connected to dozens of banks, and the extent to which U.S. companies and citizens are involved.”
This is no doubt a fascinating subject for any filmmaker to sink their teeth into, but the fact that Soderbergh‘s involved makes it an especially enticing project. We’re unsure of how exactly he plans to tell the story in terms of tone and whatnot, but however it turns out, the director has definitely caught our attention here.
