What the heck is going on? Why does Hollywood suddenly love Stephen King and everything he’s ever written? Is he dying? Is Stephen King dying?
As far as we can tell, no, Stephen King isn’t dying, but his books are apparently extremely ripe for adaptation, given that there are, like, a zillion of them in production at this very moment. And the latest update is regarding Cell, which was once to be made into a movie by Eli Roth, and is now to be made into a movie with John Cusack.
Cell, which was released in 2006, is a kind of zombie thriller that bashes heads with aspects of social commentary when the world are turned into violent, mindless drones if they happened to be in possession of a cell phone at the time of a major event. Cusack will play the main character, a comic book artist, who teams up with an unlikely ragtag crew to travel the devastated American landscape in an attempt to find his lost son. Who owns a phone.
Though we’re not completely convinced on what the social commentary is exactly (don’t own a phone or you’ll die?), Cell is one of King’s best recent novels and would actually make for a pretty cool gorefest if it was handled right. King has even written the screenplay, which is both interesting and unnerving, given that he’s not very good at them.
What do you think? Sound like something you might like to see?
