Writer/director Stephen Gaghan has been very quiet since his last theatrical directorial project, 2005’s Syriana, but now talks are starting to heat up surrounding his next film, Candy Store.
THR reported today that Brad Pitt and Denzel Washington are in talks to star in the crime-thriller that Gaghan wrote and will direct. Jamie Foxx is also interested but it’s unclear whether he’s in talks yet.
So far, not a ton is known about the plot, but THR had a few details.
Candy Store is described as a “two-hander” crime thriller with meaty roles for the two main characters. A highly trained, deep cover operative starts his life over in Brooklyn as a beat cop only to discover the global organization he was dedicated to fighting is also operating in his new backyard.
Gaghan has shown talent as a director, but he really has shined as a writer, crafting a phenomenal scrip for Syriana and having won the Oscar for best adaptation for his work on Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic.
Gaghan directed George Clooney to a best supporting actor Oscar too, showing he has the ability to work with extraordinary actors and lead them to excellence. Hopefully he can do it again with Pitt and Washington. If everything comes together, and Gaghan gets Pitt, Washington and Foxx on board, then you can bet that this film will be a serious awards contender.
Despite how early on it is in production, this project has my interest. Rest assured that we’ll keep you posted on more news about Candy Store as it develops.
