New Star Wars Rumor Points To A Potential X-Wing Squadron Spin-Off

I'll be honest here, I haven't been at all excited by the prospect of the upcoming Star Wars spin-offs that will arrive in between the official "Episodes" in the saga. It's not because I don't love Star Wars, or think that spin-offs are a bad idea; I'm just not interested in solo films featuring a young Yoda or Han Solo, and would much rather explore new territory in the ever-expansive Star Wars universe.

I’ll be honest here, I haven’t been at all excited by the prospect of the upcoming Star Wars spin-offs that will arrive in between the official “Episodes” in the saga. It’s not because I don’t love Star Wars, or think that spin-offs are a bad idea; I’m just not interested in solo films featuring a young Yoda or Han Solo, and would much rather explore new territory in the ever-expansive Star Wars universe.

Luckily, a new, interesting rumor has been circling this weekend, which points to the possibility of a film featuring an X-Wing squadron. Cool, huh?

A few days ago, a German website called Star Wars Union attended a Hasbro event, where the company detailed the future of their products, including Star Wars toys. One piece of information presented was a Star Wars release schedule that reads as follows:

2014: Rebels

2015: Episode VII

2016: Boba Fett

2017: Episode VIII

2018: Solo

2019: Episode IX

2020: Red Five

The projects through 2019 are all things we’ve heard about before, but Red Five is a new, tantalizing clue. Of course, this report could be completely false, but after it originated at Star Wars Union, other news sites like Jedi News and Making Star Wars posted the information and were quickly asked by the studio to remove it. While this is by no means confirmation, it does point to there being some validity to the news that Disney doesn’t want released yet.

So, now that we’ve all taken the requisite grain of salt, let’s examine this exciting possibility. For those who may not remember, “Red Five” was Luke Skywalker’s call sign in Episode IV: A New Hope. Now, the film could be another origin spin-off, showing a young Luke earning his stripes as an X-Wing pilot between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Or, it could focus on a new pilot, who inherits Luke’s old call sign sometime during the new trilogy.

The possibilities are, as always, endless, and this is all mere speculation. However, a film focusing on a squad of X-Wing pilots going on missions would be awesome, and the kind of spin-off movie that would really take advantage of the larger Star Wars universe. Plus, there’s always the chance that Red Five isn’t a film at all, and is another TV series (which is possible, with Rebels being on this list).

Tell us, does the idea of a Red Five Star Wars spin-off interest you? Or would you rather see movies featuring the origins or further adventures of the saga’s more central characters? Let us know in the comments below!
