According to The Daily Beast, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams recently revealed that he would be all for including an openly gay character in an upcoming Star Wars film.
During an event at the Bad Robot (Abrams’ production company) headquarters in LA, he was asked whether or not he could ever see the Star Wars movies introducing an openly gay character, to which he replied:
“Of course! When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course. In fact, I would love it,” he said. “To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
While there have been openly gay characters in the Star Wars universe before, most recently in the novel “Aftermath,” there hasn’t been one on the big screen just yet. And while this isn’t hard confirmation that we’ll absolutely be seeing this happen, given how enthusiastic and excited Abrams seemed about the possibility, I don’t imagine it will be too long now before Star Wars introduces one.
