We always knew that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be a box office hit. In fact, the only way it would have failed is if it had been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews from fans and critics alike, something which obviously didn’t happen. Now, just weeks before it hits China, the J.J. Abrams-helmed movie has become the tenth highest grossing release of all-time. It’s also the #4 movie of the year, and will continue to rise up the charts over the coming weeks.
As of right now, analysts believe Star Wars: The Force Awakens will easily beat the North American record held by Avatar with $760 million, while it’s still on track to cross the $2 billion mark. Will it be able to reach $2.7 billion to become the #1 movie of all-time? That remains to be seen, but at the rate it’s going, you have to believe that’s a very real possibility.
Something which is sure leave many fans happy though is the news that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now the highest grossing instalment of the franchise. It’s topped The Phantom Menace‘s haul of $1.027 billion, but has yet to beat what A New Hope made when inflation is taken into account. That’s still extremely impressive regardless, and it’s going to be very interesting to see how the movie does as we move into 2016.
