Captain Phasma
Played by Gwendoline Christie, Captain Phasma is the Commander of the Stormtroopers of The First Order and is, by virtue of her role and gender, a notable addition to the Star Wars universe. Firstly, she is the first significant woman villain in the franchise, and the first Stormtrooper to be revealed as being female. She is also the first woman to be seen in a senior position within the forces of The Dark Side.
As a character, she is imposing. Beyond her chrome armoured suit, her voice and presence communicate a disturbing detachment as we watch her commit the most heinous atrocities, at the orders of her superiors – Kylo Ren and General Hux.
[zergpaid]She is highly intelligent and observant, and nothing goes unnoticed as she expects the greatest levels of obedience and competence from her Stormtrooper forces. She is quick to focus on Finn as a potentially rogue Stormtrooper, but it is her actions when things go wrong that is perhaps the most interesting part of Captain Phasma.
We would possibly expect insubordination and the realization that she has been outsmarted to be the thing that cracks the icy exterior of Captain Phasma, and generate some rage – but she maintains her matter-of-fact approach, even when faced with an uncertain fate at the hands of Rebel operatives. She accepts events and deals with ramifications as they arise in such a way that it suggests Phasma has been raised as a Stormtrooper in the same way that Finn has – to the extent that even his defection does not cause the slightest prick to her conscience.
