Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Exploring The New Dark Side

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Star Wars universe has expanded itself to include villains on the scale of those associated with the most popular extended cinematic franchises such as Marvel, or DC. The story arc has always been centred on the galactic battle between The Dark Side and The Light - with the Skywalker family being at its heart, and with powerful wielders of The Force engaging in conflicts of the physical, philosophical and political kind. While Jabba The Hut, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine have long been revered as the most dastardly villains in this galaxy far, far away, this new chapter of the tale has brought forth a range of evil-doers that effortlessly rival those icons of the past, as figureheads of the new Dark Side.

General Hux

Played by Domhnall Gleeson, General Hux is the Commander of the Starkiller base, operated by The First Order. Hux is entirely dedicated to his role, overseeing the use of the giant super-weapon created by The First Order to seize and secure galactic power from the Republic. He is an intimidating, cold figure whose only other concern is to impress his superior, Emperor Snoke.

It is his awe of Snoke that creates the most interesting aspect of the character of Hux, which is his conflict with Kylo Ren. Ren is another of Snoke’s apprentices, but is vastly different in personality to Hux. This difference serves to highlight the extent of General Hux’s disciplined approach to his work, and his focused attention to detail. There appears to be nothing else in this man’s life, other than his dedication to the cause of The First Order and his desire to please Emperor Snoke.
