This weekend past, Star Wars: The Force Awakens made box office history. Not that that should come as much of a surprise – J.J. Abrams’ franchise revival has been breaking through records left, right and center – but now, Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that the sci-fi sequel has officially crossed the $2 billion mile marker at the international box office.

It is only the third motion picture to do so, providing the figures aren’t adjusted for inflation, arriving behind Titanic ($2.18 billion) and the seemingly insurmountable box office king, Avatar ($2.78 billion).

How and ever, there’s every chance that The Force Awakens will retain its steady stream of income thanks to the recent launch in China. Plus, this is a film that hasn’t even been out in the wild for two months at this point.

Over the weekend, Disney chairman Alan Horn released the following statement to commemorate the film blasting into the coveted $2 billion club.

“This is a historic moment for Star Wars, for Lucasfilm, and for Disney, and all of us here are extremely gratified to be a part of this journey with fans around the world who have made Star Wars: The Force Awakens such an extraordinary success…The film’s achievements are truly astounding, and it’s our great honor to relaunch this cinematic galaxy not only for all the devoted decades-long fans but for a new generation who will keep the Star Wars legacy alive for many years to come.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still in theaters at the time of writing, laying the groundwork for Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to swoop into cinemas come December.
