The first teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens actually debuted over a year before the film’s release, in November of 2014, so fans were hopeful that they might get a glimpse of the still untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII with Rogue One. Well, Gareth Edwards’ prequel hits theatres tonight and unfortunately, that’s not going to happen – but, thanks to Lucasfilm head honcho Kathleen Kennedy, we do finally have some idea of when we’ll be seeing the first footage.
Kennedy was asked about the trailer during an interview with the BBC and, without being too specific, was able to provide us with a rough time-frame:
“Well, pretty soon,” she responded. “We’re giving [Rogue One] a little bit of breathing room, and then probably heading into spring, you’ll start to see things.”
Obviously, “spring 2017” is still a pretty big window, but we may be able to narrow it down some with a healthy dose of speculation. Most blockbusters debut their first teasers about 8-9 months before they release, and if Episode VIII follows suit, that means it’ll probably be sometime in March. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast hits theatres on March 17 – could the first trailer for Rian Johnson’s upcoming film debut alongside it? Perhaps.
