Ever since George Lucas relinquished his force grip over LucasFilm and sent it packing off to DisneyLand, fan reaction has slowly inched away from “Why are there gonna be more Star Wars movies?” to… well, this. And by that, we mean fans are considering the possibility of a new trilogy something to be excited about. I mean, it can’t get any worse, can it?
You all know what a vague “George Lucas sold LucasFilm” intro like that means, anyway: more Star Wars news, people! I know, I know, there’s been a lot of it lately, most of which will presumably turn out to be the sum of wild speculation and hyperbole.
This time it’s a little better than a rumor, though, because reportedly Michael Arndt (who wrote the brilliant Toy Story 3) has completed a 40+ page treatment for the movie, and is thought to be at least one of (perhaps) several writers brought in to write Star Wars: Episode VII.
And for some reason that nobody is that sure of, Brad Bird, J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg are going to read over his treatment. Even though they’re not confirmed to be involved. Just ’cause, you know… maybe they’ll direct it.
So has Star Wars: Episode VII actually found its writer? Arndt certainly isn’t a bad choice, given that his screenplay for Toy Story 3 was kind of magical. Oh, hell, it was magical.
What do you make of this reveal? Do you think Arndt would do a good job as a Star Wars screenwriter? He’s got an Oscar, you know.
