Attack The Block Director Joe Cornish Wanted For Star Trek 3

Though he did a fantastic job with Star Trek, director J.J. Abrams dropped the ball a bit with its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. Personally, I enjoyed it quite a bit but critics weren't too kind to the film and now that he's in charge of Star Wars: Episode VII, Abrams won't be involved in Star Trek 3, which is probably a good thing as the franchise could use some fresh blood behind the camera.

Though he did a fantastic job with Star Trek, director J.J. Abrams dropped the ball a bit with the sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. Personally, I enjoyed it quite a bit but critics weren’t too kind to the film and now that he’s in charge of Star Wars: Episode VII, Abrams won’t be involved in Star Trek 3, which is probably a good thing as the franchise could use some fresh blood behind the camera.

Of course, the question now is who will take Abrams’ place? Names like Rupert Wyatt and Jon M. Chu had been tossed around but today we’re hearing from Deadline that the frontrunner is actually Attack the Block director Joe Cornish.

Though he hasn’t directed anything since that aforementioned film, Cornish has been attached to several projects here and there and has kept busy with writing. For those who don’t know, he penned the upcoming Ant-Man film with Edgar Wright.

Despite not having too many notable credits under his belt, Joe Cornish is an exciting pick for Star Trek 3. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love Attack The Block and though taking over for Abrams would be a huge step for him, I think that he’s up to the task. I’m curious to see what a Star Trek film would look like under Cornish’s direction.

With the Summer 2014 shoot quickly approaching, I imagine we’ll hear more firm news on who will be helming Star Trek 3 in the near future. For now though, head down to the comments and let us know if you want to see Joe Cornish in the director’s chair.
