The second film by director David Robert Mitchell delves into a similar subject to his first. While The Myth Of The American Sleepover focused on one element of teenage life, his sophomore effort, It Follows, veers into that next stage after sleepovers become dull. Sexuality. Now that we’ve got your attention, check out the first French teaser trailer above for a grasp of the crazed horror in store. Be careful, there’s a few NSFW shots scattered throughout.
A new angle on the tired teen horror genre, instead of using the boring “werewolf/vampire/monster as a fancy metaphor for puberty” trope, It Follows goes down its own path. The story centres on a teenage girl, Jay, who discovers that she’s experiencing a wealth of weirdness – on top of the usual hormonal insanity – after a normal sexual shuffle. Roping in her friends to track down what the heck’s happened, the film takes a smidgen of its plot device from The Ring in order to tell this unique tale.
Hitting up all the major festivals this year, the pic has collected a portfolio of solid critical acclaim. Our own horror hound Matt Donato granted it a glowing four-star review, concluding that “It Follows is a unique treat for horror fans looking for something new, fresh and terrifying. While getting stuck in minimalism at times, there’s something to be said about turning geriatric walking into pure, unflinching terror – of the mind, that is.” If that’s not got you excited – or terrified – then what will?
It Follows opens in France on February 4th, and will hopefully land a U.S. release date soon.
For 19-year-old Jay, fall should be about school, boys and weekends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, or something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her teenage friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind.
