As if MCU fans’ spider-senses aren’t tingling enough already!
The casting of the criminally underrated Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 has just been upstaged by some major potential plot leaks. As always, these should not be taken as gospel (Reddit, innit!), but they do make for pretty interesting reading.
The plot point with the biggest repercussions involves Spidey’s mentor, Tony Stark. Although Peter Parker himself was the one to come a cropper at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel suggests that it’s actually Stark himself who’s no more, with the events therefore taking place after the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4, in which Tony will apparently die.
Furthermore, it appears that Spidey will be chasing a piece of missing Stark tech in the sequel which has presumably fallen into the wrong hands. Although, with Mysterio regarded as a master thief, perhaps “fallen” has nothing to do with it. It seems that this chase will take Peter Parker to London, England, too. Let’s just hope he doesn’t take Thor’s directions on how to use the Tube, eh?
What’s also suggested is that Spider-Man won’t be alone here, as he’ll have an acquaintance in MI6’s Jessica Drew, who at some point is expected to evolve into Spider-Woman. Another batch of familiar names appear in the form of Spencer and Alistair Smythe, known to many comic book fans as the Spider-Slayers. Though like Drew, chances are they’ll be powerless at this point.
Furthermore, the report suggests that Gwyneth Paltrow will be returning as Miss Potts and presumably be in charge of Stark Industries due to Tony’s absence, whilst Michael Keaton’s Vulture is again circling the scene. Add to that the villainous Mac Gargan, AKA Scorpion, and alongside Mysterio and Vulture, we’re well on our way to the Sinister Six.
Finally, Spider-Man: Field Trip seems to be replacing The Spectacular Spider-Man as the odds-on favorite title for the sequel. It certainly follows the formula of Spider-Man: Homecoming and ties in with the London visit, but with Avengers 4 still on the horizon, that all feels a long, long way away.
