It’s taking an excruciatingly long time for Marvel and Sony to settle on the young character who will play Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Captain America: Civil War currently filming in Atlanta, and the plan being to include the wall-crawler in a tiny capacity in that pivotal Marvel event pic, the heat is on for a decision to be made… soon. Now, Deadline hasn’t shed light on who will play the character, but rather when we’ll know the identity of the new Spidey.
According to a new report mentioning that apparent contender Tom Holland (The Impossible) has been spotted in Atlanta, a decision could come as early as next week. There’s apparently some disagreement between Marvel and Sony over the choice that’s slowing down an ultimate verdict, but there is a ticking clock in play, so one side will have to acquiesce sooner or later.
[zerg]Rumors have stated that long-time frontrunner Asa Butterfield (Hugo) is now out of the running, and the race is between Holland, Charlie Rowe, Matthew Lintz and Charlie Plummer. Though the latest buzz has Holland and Rowe as the two main contenders, previous reports have stated that Plummer (Boardwalk Empire) was at one point Marvel’s choice, while Sony had been leaning more toward Holland.
Spider-Man played a key role in the comic-book version of Marvel’s Civil War, which serves as the inspiration for next year’s Captain America threequel. Though the character isn’t appearing in as big a capacity there as he did in the comics (simply because a story had to be set in stone well before Marvel struck a deal with Sony to incorporate the beloved character), not including Spidey at all would certainly irk some fans, and Deadline also states that his role in Civil War will be more than just a cameo.
As such, actually casting him is crucial. After Civil War, the character will lead a stand-alone Sony movie set within the MCU (the director for that solo pic is also up in the air, with the competition apparently between St. Vincent‘s Ted Melfi and Warm Bodies‘ Jonathan Levine), the first of multiple under Sony’s deal. Rest assured, we’ll keep our ears to the ground and let you know as soon as a decision on the identity of the new Spider-Man is made.
