It’s no secret that Jon Watts and his editing team trimmed a fair amount of fat from Spider-Man: Homecoming prior to its theatrical debut, which goes some way to explaining why so many scenes from the trailers weren’t featured in the final cut.
One of those sequences revolved around Peter Parker’s last-minute trip to Washington D.C., where he and his classmates were to compete in the academic decathlon. And so, while riding alongside Ned and Michelle – Jacob Batalon and Zendaya, respectively – the camera pans to a pre-rendered shot of the Triskelion, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s former headquarters that was first introduced and later destroyed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Damage Control is still in the process of cleaning up the mess, according to Michelle, who expresses her doubts about Steve Rogers as a whole – likely a subtle reference to the calamitous events of Civil War, during which time Cap essentially went rogue and defied governmental officials.
This deleted scene doesn’t offer much, so it’s small wonder why Watts and his team left it on the cutting room floor. Still, it’s another example of Marvel scattering a bunch of thoughtful Easter eggs across its film slate in order to tie everything together under the humungous cinematic umbrella that is the MCU.
Spider-Man: Homecoming, which has now laid claim to the title of 2017’s highest-grossing superhero movie ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863 million) and Wonder Woman ($819 million), is available to pick up on Digital HD. A Blu-ray release will follow on October 17th, lending you plenty of time to revisit Spidey’s big-screen adventure before Thor: Ragnarok whisks us off to the cosmos. Expect that one to arrive on November 3rd.
