In case you haven’t heard, Tom Holland, king of spoilers and ruler of leaks, let slip the title of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 last night. Though unlike previous instances, this one seemed to be intentional, with the fan favorite actor taking to Instagram to show off a script for the film which had the title plastered on the front. Or at least, we sure hope it was intentional, because if this was another mistake and he wasn’t supposed to reveal it, he might be out of a job.
Anyways, the title’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and already, fans are speculating about what it could mean. But it’s best not to read into things too much as it very likely refers to exactly what it says. That being that Spidey’s a long way from home. Or at least, he will be once he’s resurrected in Avengers 4 and swings into the Jon Watts-directed sequel. Just the other month, in fact, producer Kevin Feige confirmed as much, saying:
“We start filming early July. We film in London. We shot first film in Atlanta. And we shoot a lot of films in London but there’s another reason we’re shooting in London which is, yes, Spidey, of course, will spend some time in New York, but he’ll spend some time in other parts of the globe.
The way Civil War and the fact that he went to Leipzig Airport and then has to go back to school, informed Homecoming, the two Avengers films that precede [the sequel] will greatly inform, probably even more so, the next movie.”
Now, all that being said, some interesting fan theories have begun to spring up and though we don’t think they hold much weight, they’re still worth considering. For one, some believe Far From Home could be referring to Spidey’s time in Soul World following his death in Infinity War, while others think it could allude to another universe, with Marvel laying the seeds for an adaptation of the Spider-Verse storyline from the comics.
Again though, if you ask us, we think the literal meaning is the one to stick with given what confirmed info we have. And that’s perfectly fine, as it’ll be a ton of fun watching the wall-crawler swinging around the globe when Spider-Man: Far From Home opens on July 5th, 2019.
