Nathan Drake may be enjoying a fruitful boon in the video game medium, with Naughty Dog prepping to bring back the grizzled treasure hunter early next year for A Thief’s End, but his journey to the silver screen for an Uncharted movie has been anything but smooth sailing. And now, Heroic Hollywood brings word that Horrible Bosses‘ Seth Gordon is the latest director to leave the troubled project.
According to sources close with the stalled production, Gordon’s exit is consequence of Sony steering the adaptation in a whole new direction. It’s a change of heart purportedly born of budgetary constraints, with newly-appointed Head of Sony Pictures Tom Rothman supposedly claiming that the allotted budget for the finalized Uncharted movie will be more in line with Resident Evil than Indiana Jones, despite many believing that the company would nurture Nathan Drake into a bona fide franchise lead.
[zerg]Alas, it’s the latest in a long string of road bumps that Sony’s project has ran into, with the likes of David O. Russell, Neil Burger and Mark Wahlberg all having been attached to the flailing adaptation at some point over the last 8-or-so years. At the time of writing, there seems to be no immediate replacement for Gordon at the helm, and the only word from Sony is a message assuring fans that the budget isn’t being cut; Uncharted is simply being steered in a new direction.
Those waiting to see Nathan Drake make his cinematic debut are going to be waiting a little longer, though we’ll be sure to keep you updated on the status of Sony’s Uncharted movie as this story develops.
