Variety is reporting that Sony head honcho Amy Pascal is eyeing the $1 billion worldwide mark for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Given that Marvel hit the milestone with The Avengers, it’s easy to see why rival studios think they can achieve it as well. Plus, with The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Sinister Six and Venom all already in development, obviously the studio is hoping for a home run with Marc Webb’s second Spidey outing.
Of course, the question is, can Sony realistically hit $1 billion, as it’s not an easy feat. Looking back at The Amazing Spider-Man, though you couldn’t call it a flop, it did earn less than all three of Sam Raimi’s films and only took in $262 domestically and $752 million worldwide. Again, not terrible numbers, but definitely not what the studio was hoping for. Not only that, but reviews on the sequel are mixed so far, which also doesn’t fare well for Sony.
Then again, this is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that we’re talking about. The film has been marketed to death and audiences around the world are eager to see it. If it doesn’t hit $1 billion, you can bet that it will come pretty close. Personally, I’m predicting that it will reach the $700 million range, like its predecessor did. And while that might not be what Sony is hoping for, it’s nothing to scoff at either.
Tell us, do you think that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will hit $1 billion?
