As the two crown jewels among Naughty Dog’s portfolio, it’s hardly surprising that both The Last of Us and Uncharted are being prepped for the live-action treatment – not only because of their cinematic tendencies, but also because of how each game/franchise has resonated with PlayStation fans.
Setting those wheels in motion hasn’t been easy, of course, with Uncharted in particular suffering from a number of creative turnovers – at one point, Mark Wahlberg, David O. Russell and Baywatch helmer Seth Gorden had been attached to the video game adaptation.
As writers and directors came and went, Sony tentatively pegged its Uncharted movie for launch on June 30, 2017, though it seems the studio has now quietly bumped the live-action rendition from that slate. Coming Soon reports that the action-adventure title no longer holds a release date to call its own, and considering that Joe Carnahan – the scribe who recently climbed aboard the long-gestating project – also has 2018 sequel Bad Boys for Life coming up, we don’t imagine Uncharted will be swinging into theaters anytime before 2019.
It is coming together, though, with Caranhan taking to Twitter to reveal that, at least in script form, the opening sequence is shaping up to be a doozy.

It’s been a long and meandering road to launch, but fans can at least take solace in the fact that the live-action Uncharted movie is moving forward – just very, very slowly. Joe Carnahan is the only creative talent attached for now – producers Charles Roven, Avi Arad, and Alex Gartner notwithstanding – but now that Sony has afforded a little more breathing to the languishing project, we expect the studio to begin zeroing in on a director shortlist.
