Sony’s Marvel Universe is beginning to come together at a brisk clip.
With talk of standalone pics for Kraven and Mysterio, not to mention a spinoff based on Silver Sable and Black Cat from director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights), the studio has made serious headway on its own Spider-Man universe in recent weeks, and it all begins with the launch of Ruben Fleischer’s Venom next October.
The fun doesn’t stop there, though, as we’re now hearing that Sony is planning yet another spinoff for their burgeoning new franchise, and it’ll revolve around none other than Nightwatch. Jeff Sneider, EIC of The Tracking Board, is the one with the scoop here, and according to him, Edward Ricourt is currently penning the script and Spike Lee is being eyed to helm.
Now, there’s been no confirmation on this from the studio as of yet, but this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a potential Nightwatch movie. In fact, there were originally rumors that he’d appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming, though that obviously didn’t happen.
For those unfamiliar with the character, which is probably a lot of you since he’s not exactly an A-List hero, Nightwatch’s real name is Kevin Trench, a doctor who “witnessed a costumed man die battling some terrorists armed with invisibility-generating ‘cloaking” devices, and unmasked the corpse to learn that it was an older version of himself. ”
Of course, he freaked out after discovering this and took off to a deserted island, “reasoning that if he just never wore the suit or went home, he wouldn’t die.” Obviously, though, things don’t go according to plan and eventually, Trench realizes that he can’t avoid destiny and decides to “investigate the costume’s origins.”
Again, Nightwatch has never been the most popular hero in the Marvel Universe, but he’s got an interesting story and could certainly carry his own solo film. As such, it’s not too surprising to hear that Sony’s toying with the idea of bringing him to the big screen and while we still can’t get our heads around a Spider-Man cinematic universe that doesn’t actually involve the web-slinger himself, we are intrigued by this latest development.
We will, as always, keep you posted if any further updates arise, but in the meantime, tell us, would you like to see Sony do a Nightwatch movie? Let us know in the usual place!
