You can go ahead and add Jackpot‘s name to the growing list of Spider-Man related characters destined for the big screen.
Variety is reporting today that Sony’s currently developing a movie based on the hero, which looks set to become the latest Spidey spinoff alongside Venom, Silk, Silver & Black, Nightwatch, Kraven the Hunter and the Jared Leto-fronted vampire flick, Morbius.
Of course, all of these films are currently hinging on Venom‘s potential success – or lack thereof – as Sony Pictures may well be staring down the face of a Dark Universe-like situation come later this year where their franchise-starter flops spectacularly, only to raise serious question marks over future installments.
Regardless, that hasn’t quelled the studio’s enthusiasm for their Spidey-verse and though details on what they have planned for Jackpot are practically non-existent at this early, early stage, Variety does confirm that the project’s now in development, so we should learn more soon.
A relatively new character who debuted in the Free Comic Book Day giveaway Spider-Man: Swing Shift, released on May 5th, 2007, Jackpot “is the codename shared by two fictional superheroes, Sara Ehret and Alana Jobson.” Frankly, it’s not like there’s a particularly huge interest out there in seeing the property brought to the big screen, so it’s a little bit baffling as to why Sony’s now adding it to their slate.
If we’re being honest, the more and more we hear about the studio’s plans for their Spidey-verse, the more worried we get, as announcing all these films before Venom even hits theaters seems way too overambitious and the kind of mistake Warner Bros. made when they first started out with the DCEU. Still, we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now and wait patiently to see how the aforementioned Tom Hardy-led movie does first before rushing to any judgements.
