Sony Considering Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse TV Spinoffs

It's fair to say that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been a barnstorming success for the folks at Sony. Not only did it earn enormously positive critical reviews, with many fans calling it one of the best superhero movies ever, but the animated film also picked up a coveted Golden Globe award last week. It's understandable, then, that the studio's looking to expand the multiverse of the movie into a different medium.

In a piece on Sony’s future in the industry, The New York Times commented that they’re considering creating some TV spinoffs for Spider-Verse, likely featuring some of the alternate Spideys that first debuted in the recent pic, which introduced wider audiences to the concept of a multiverse full of Spider-Men for the first time.

This could be a smart move on Sony’s part. For one, Spider-Verse was so full of memorable side characters that fans would love to lap up a whole TV show based around each of them. Plus, the different animation styles and worlds that each of the Spiders inhabit could make sure every series has its own distinct flavor. For instance, a show starring Spider-Ham could be a hilarious, Looney Tunes-eque cartoon while a solo vehicle for Peni Parker could be infused with anime-style action.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Sony’s hopes to expand the Spider-Verse, either. Spider-Women spinoff movie is also reportedly in development, with it expected to see the return of Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen and the introduction of Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman and Cindy Moon AKA Silk. More adventures for Miles Morales would also be an awesome idea, if you ask me.

Of course, NYT only said that Sony’s considering making some Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse TV shows, so fans shouldn’t get their hopes up just yet. But it definitely sounds like the studio’s ready to embrace the huge potential that the Spider-Man franchise offers.
