Ever since the dazzling first bit of footage from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse made its way online and caught us all off guard, the upcoming spinoff’s felt like a project with real potential, and after those glowing early reactions emerged on social media last week, there’s now reason to think that Miles Morales’ big screen debut might live up to all the hype.
Some folks are even calling it one of the best comic book movies ever made, and though pre-release buzz doesn’t always translate into box office glory, Sony’s clearly feeling confident about how Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will perform, as they’ve just announced a sequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joaquim Dos Santos, known for cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender and more recently, Netflix’s Voltron, will step behind the camera. No further details were disclosed – other than it’ll once again focus on Miles Morales – and it’s obviously far too early to start talking about casting and plot, but it’s clear that Into the Spider-Verse will no doubt be planting some seeds for its follow-up to explore down the road.
After all, there’s more than enough going on in the film for a sequel to pick up on. As well as bringing us Shameik Moore in the lead as Miles Morales and Jake Johnson as an older Peter Parker, Spider-Verse also features Hailee Steinfeld in the role of Spider-Gwen, Nicolas Cage as Spider-Noir, Kimiko Glenn as SP//dr, and John Mulaney as Spider-Ham. There are surely a few more surprises in store as well and as such, we imagine that there’s going to be a lot of threads left hanging by the end of the movie, which Dos Santos’ effort can then tackle whenever it arrives.
But first, we’ve got Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to look forward to, which swings into theaters on December 14th. At which point, we’ll know if it’s truly as good as people are saying it is.
