In a year that’s seen practically every box office record broken, the failure of a guaranteed tentpole like Solo: A Star Wars Story is only amplified. And unfortunately for the Ron Howard-directed space opera, despite an initial report stating the film would need a strong home video release if there was to be any hope of breaking even, that’s just no longer the case.
Amid talk that it’d barely be able to graze the $500 million mark – which, let’s face it, is a figure the Anthology pic will not attain, as it currently sits at just under $380 million – The Hollywood Reporter confirmed last month that The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are bracing for a loss of roughly $50 million on Solo, with some estimating that number could rise as high as $80 million. Having opened to an abysmal $84.7 million stateside – a total worse than practically every Star Wars film released since the turn of the century, mind you – and just $143 million worldwide, taking a loss like the one that’s expected isn’t all that surprising.
Nonetheless, the film itself can at least take solace in the fact that it faired much better with the fandom than the much-maligned Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which, by the way, is now infamous for the notoriously lousy audience score it received on Rotten Tomatoes, despite being certified fresh. As such, there’s sure to be those who’ll be picking up Solo: A Star Wars Story when it arrives on home video, and we might now be able to provide you with an idea of when that will be.
According to ComicBook.com (H/T Digital Bits), a retail source has confirmed that Solo: A Star Wars Story is scheduled for a September 25th debut on Blu-ray/DVD. Although no other information was provided, such as special features and retailer exclusives, the four-month window post-release does correspond with previous franchise installments.
Regardless, once we hear something official from Disney we’ll be sure to let you know. But until then, tell us, will you be picking up the movie on Blu-ray? Or was one viewing enough for you? Sound off in the comments section and give us your thoughts.
