The second trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi left us with many questions we’re desperate to have answered: Does Kylo Ren kill his mother Leia? Will Rey really turn to the Dark Side? A much smaller moment in the trailer that could have major consequences, though, is the part where Kylo Ren smashes his helmet in a fit of anger. Just what drives him to lash out like this? Could it reveal something about his wavering allegiance?
Star Wars theorist Mike Zeroh thinks he’s worked out the reason. According to the YouTuber, it’s all to do with Supreme Leader Snoke rejecting the Force user formally known as Ben Solo for a new protege – Rey. Here’s what Zeroh says:
“So what I believe might happen in the first to second act of this film – judging from the trailer of Kylo Ren getting very angry and smashing his helmet into the wall – it could be that Kylo Ren was in discussions with Supreme Leader Snoke.”
“And then Snoke then rejects Kylo Ren and says that he’s now interested in [Rey] and that ‘you are now to deliver her to me.’ That’s exactly when Supreme Leader Snoke orders Kylo Ren to find Rey on the planet Ahch-To.”
“So he’s going down the elevator on Snoke’s Supremacy…and he gets very, very mad at himself that Snoke just rejected him and is showing more interest in Rey than Kylo Ren and smashes his helmet into the wall.”
It’s an interesting theory, and one that’s supported by much of what we’ve seen so far. The thrust of the second trailer was Snoke making a speech to someone about how he senses the great power within them. On the face of it, we assumed that he was talking to Kylo Ren, but fans have suspected that he could be speaking to Rey, instead. Especially because he has Rey in a Force grip by the end of the preview, which could be some test to prove her strength.
This isn’t the first time Star Wars fans have latched onto the idea of Rey factoring into Snoke’s masterplan, either. The man behind the evil overlord, Andy Serkis, has even hinted that we’re “onto something” with this line of thinking. Maybe it’s not Luke we need to worry about turning to the Dark Side but Rey instead?
The truth will finally be revealed when Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on December 15th.
