There has been so much chatter about director Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming monster/machine smackdown Pacific Rim, but when you boil it all down, it’s just that: chatter. Most of what’s been revealed has come down to some official images, the news that Warner Bros. was forcing a rather unwarranted 3D conversion on the film and, of course, some high praise from Hall H at Comic-Con.
Ahead of what will ultimately be a trailer along with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in December, the secretive (albeit awesome) trend continues for Pacific Rim with the debut of a cool new vintage poster that accents the film’s monster movie mantra all while delivering an equally retro propaganda twist.
One thing I can all but guarantee (and disappointingly so) is that this poster will stand as infinitely more creative and, ultimately, interesting than the final studio product you’ll see in multiplexes across North America. It’s too bad edgy promotional material like this is only crafted for viral material but, at least, we still get it.
If you’re still unfamiliar with Pacific Rim, the film will follow colossal, human-piloted mechs called Jaegers (see the poster) which are created to do battle with the Kaiju, equally massive monsters that have risen from the deep of the ocean and pose a rather significant threat to mankind. Del Toro will direct a cast that includes Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day.
Pacific Rim storms into theaters July 12, 2013.
