Aside from Ruben Fleischer’s Venom movie and Morbius, the Living Vampire, there’s another Spider-Man spinoff gestating over at Sony Pictures.
Its name? Silver & Black, the female-fronted offshoot that has already tapped Gina Prince-Bythewood to write and direct. It’s still early days, mind you, but with Kevin Feige and Co. working towards the long-awaited Captain Marvel movie, and Warner Bros. gearing up for its second Wonder Woman, there’s a real sense that Silver & Black is riding the crest of a wave, as audiences flock to see their favorite female superheroes projected onto the big screen.
And soon, we’ll be able to add Silver Sablinova (Silver Sable) and Felicia Hardy (Black Cat) to the growing collection. That being said, the Powers That Be have since delayed the film’s production start due to issues with the script, and that’s exactly what Prince-Bythewood told Screen Rant when asked for a status update on Silver & Black:
The update is just really pounding out the script. It all starts with the script. You gotta have a great script so we want to make sure that’s right before we jump in.
Angled as part of Sony’s fledgling Marvel Universe, the Silver & Black movie has already attracted a slew of high-profile writers into its midst, after the likes of Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld), Christopher Yost, Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet all took a pass at the spinoff’s script.
It’s one that clearly needs more work, though, as Silver & Black was initially expected to begin filming back in March. That production start date has been pushed indefinitely, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on this female-fronted project as it begins to coalesce.
