The first clip from Steve McQueen’s film Shame, which stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan has been released. The film which won Fassbender the Best Actor award at The Venice Film Festival only a few days ago is already receiving serious awards buzz.

However, with the films graphic nudity, it’s very hard to believe the film could escape with anything but an NC-17 rating, which would drastically downsize the film’s commercial appeal.

Steve McQueen has stated he has no plans to release a more commercial cut of the film for theatrical release, which has just been picked up by Fox Searchlight for U.S. distribution. Fox Searchlight aims to release the film towards the end of the year to make a run at the awards season.

The clip, which starts as an interview at the Venice Film Festival, gives us the first taste of the film at about 2:30 seconds in. Though the clip tells us next to nothing about the film, it provides suspense and already depicts Fassbender’s extraordinary depth of character.

“Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandon’s insular life spirals out of control.”

Shame was just screened at the Toronto Film Festival and is being scheduled for release later this year.
