If you recall, Shailene Woodley was all set to play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In fact, she had even shot all of her scenes. Then, this past summer, director Marc Webb decided to cut her from the film. Though it was never ruled out that she might show up in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, now we’re hearing from the actress herself that due to commitments stemming from her upcoming film Divergent, she might not be able to enter the Marvel Universe.
While at the Sundance Film Festival promoting White Bird in a Blizzard, MTV asked Woodley whether she still hoped to make an appearance in the third entry into Webb’s Spidey franchise. She told them the following:
”I don’t know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two Divergent films, I don’t know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year.”
What will likely happen, and what we’ve been hearing, is that the Mary Jane role will be recast. I mean, there is still a small chance that Woodley will be able to make the film fit into her schedule, but with two Divergent sequels already greenlit, I don’t think the actress will have time to juggle another big franchise.
