Last summer, This Is The End proved that moviegoers will turn up en masse to see a lot of funny people doing crazy things on-screen, even in projects far out enough to feature cannibal gangs, demonic genitalia, high-speed rapturing and the Backstreet Boys (in under ten minutes of screen time). And so, confirmation that some members of that apoca-comedy’s principal cast, including Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jonah Hill, will be joining forces for another project shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who took a peek at just how much their last venture picked up at the box-office.
What’s more surprising are the specifics what they’ve planned next. According to TheWrap, Rogen, Franco and Hill will topline a raunchy animated comedy called Sausage Party, alongside Kristen Wiig, Edward Norton, Michael Cera, Nick Kroll and David Krumholtz.
The flick will follow a heroic sausage link who goes on a quest to reaffirm his existence after falling out of a shopping cart. Making new friends, the sausage link embarks on a dangerous journey through the aisles of the supermarket to return to his proper place before the Fourth of July sale.
No specifics on who will be voicing who yet, but I think we should all just take a moment to marvel at the fact that this comedy is actually happening. The film’s terrific cast aside, it’s pretty clear that Sausage Party is going for a hard R-rating, and it’s commendable that Sony Pictures and Annapurna Pictures are willing to take a risk with such an undeniably out-there project. Of course, This Is The End‘s startling success cleared a lot of obstacles in the way of innovative movies like Sausage Party, but you’ve got to love Rogen, Franco and Hill for not resting on their laurels.
The film will be directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon. Tiernan has a background in animated Thomas & Friends shorts, while Vernon has co-directed such animated properties as Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. Rogen penned the script with his This Is The End collaborator Evan Goldberg, and Sausage Party‘s executive-producers Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir.
What do you make of this comedy and its all-star cast? Is the ridiculous premise a bridge too far for Rogen and co., or will they make it work? Sound off below.
Sausage Party is expected to arrive at some point in 2015.
