The long-gestating The Secret Life of Walter Mitty finally seems close to completion. Sure we’ve had a beautiful trailer, a few still images, even some serious Oscar buzz after a rapturous showing at CinemaCon in April, but now we have an official poster, courtesy of MSN.
It’s perfect – whimisical, minimalist, tilt-shifted to oblivion; it sets the stall for the film as a very modern fantasy drama. It could be everything that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button wasn’t, in other words.
It’s going to be one of the major holiday movies this year, there’s no doubt about it. With a cast of comedy luminaries such as – besides Ben Stiller – Kristen Wiig, Patton Oswalt, Adam Scott, Katheryn Hahn, AND Sean Penn, it’s hard to imagine how the film could fail. A Christmas release also positions the film perfectly for prime-Oscar contention, a smart move on the part of distributor 20th Century Fox. Could it manage to be that rare thing – a live-action family movie that acheives critical and commercial success? Could it be the Deck The Halls for the 2010’s? As ever, only time will tell, but judging from the poster we’re going to be in for a treat.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is released December 25th.
