Sony’s Marvel Universe is beginning to come together at a brisk clip.
With talk of standalone pics for Kraven and Mysterio, not to mention a spinoff based on Silver Sable and Black Cat from director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights), the studio has made serious headway on its own Spidey universe in recent weeks, and it all begins with the launch of Ruben Fleischer’s Venom next October. Filming is expected to commence this fall, when Tom Hardy (Dunkirk) will be wrestling with that titular alien symbiote known as Eddie Brock, but he may not be the only one bonded to the symbiote come 2018.
Amid reports of Carnage being selected as the film’s primary antagonist, thereby fuelling speculation that Gotham‘s Cameron Monaghan has been shortlisted for the coveted role, That Hashtag Show brings word today that Anne Weying is set to appear as Eddie Brock’s ex-wife and former symbiote host. Sony is reportedly casting the net in search of an actress between the ages of 25 and 32, but assuming THS is on point with this unfounded tidbit, Weying’s inclusion could pave the way for She-Venom to appear opposite Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock.
Those familiar with the source material will know that Anne Weying was left paralyzed by the all-powerful Sin Eater in the comics. Circling the jaws of death, Weying is then ‘saved’ by the Venom symbiote to become She-Venom, before succumbing to depression soon thereafter. Whether Sony and Ruben Fleischer stay true to that harrowing arc remains to be seen, but for now, file this one in the rumor cabinet.
Sony Pictures has a long way to go if it’s to ever compete with Marvel – thanks to Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s blistering success, the MCU is now at $12 billion and counting – but the studio’s own Spidey universe will begin with the launch of Ruben Fleischer’s Venom movie on October 5th, 2018. Other projects in the mix include Silver & Black, along with spinoff movies featuring Kraven and Mysterio.
