Ridley Scott’s The Martian may be the chief concern for Sebastian Stan at the moment, but the actor’s role in Captain America: Civil War is looming large as one of the hottest releases of 2016.

During Toronto International Film Festival, the Winter Solider himself took time to talk to us about the threequel, including its brutal nature and why Joe and Anthony Russo’s superhero showdown is shaping up to be unlike anything else that has come before. High praise, of course, but by enlisting a star-studded ensemble and upping the ante, Civil War is one we daren’t take our eye off.

In a recent interview with Uproxx, Stan was candid about his role as Bucky Barnes, and why both he and Kevin Feige didn’t believe that the disillusioned character would be returning to the fray beyond last year’s really rather excellent The Winter Solider. From day one, Bucky’s arc was never set in stone.

“It was a lot more like that. You know, I was in an office with Kevin Feige at one point and I remember they were educating me. I didn’t know anything. I didn’t grow up with comic books. I didn’t know anything about it. So, they were educating me about it going, “This is what happens with Bucky, he becomes The Winter Solider.” And I was nodding my head and taking it in going, “Okay, this is cool, but are you talking to me like I have this part of The Winter Soldier? Are you saying I should be excited?

And actually earlier this year when Kevin came to the set of Civil War, I actually asked him, “How does it feel to come to this set and watch these people?” And he said to me straight, “Yeah, we were talking about it, but the truth is we didn’t know we were going to be able to do it.” They didn’t really know they were going to be able to get to do Civil War. They didn’t even know they were going to be able to do The Winter Soldier.”

Siding with Team Cap in this instance, Bucky Barnes is primed to play a big part in Captain America: Civil War next year, with set photos hinting that Stan’s anti-hero may be captured by Baron Zemo – the “main villain,” apparently – forcing Chris Evans’ star-spangled hero to recruit Ant-Man into the Avengers roster. How exactly this pans out will ultimately be revealed when the film graces theaters on May 5, 2016.
