Those disappointed by the lack of MCU and Star Wars-related goings-on at this month’s San Diego Comic-Con should take comfort in the fact that Warner Bros. is set to go pretty hard over the course of the convention, which is held from the 19th to the 22nd of July. For one thing, we can expect some activity around Godzilla: King of the Monsters, with the excellent chance that we’ll be getting our first look at some footage from the upcoming monster movie.
Confirmation of the film’s presence came from director Michael Dougherty via Twitter. When the Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus helmsman was asked whether or not the famed lizard would be stomping into Hall H, Dougherty replied with a simple and unambiguous “Yes,” leaving most of the details still up in the air for the time being.
Of course, the great Gojira will be just one of several Warner properties making an appearance at SDCC. As well as putting a spotlight on horror films It: Chapter Two and The Nun, the studio will also be showcasing the next few entries in the DCEU. Expect some news and maybe even some footage from Wonder Woman 1984 and Shazam!, not to mention the first trailer for Aquaman.
Given the mixed results yielded by the DC Extended Universe’s attempts at world-building, here’s hoping that Warner have learned a few lessons when it comes to fleshing out Godzilla’s MonsterVerse in a satisfying manner. Granted, things have been going pretty solidly for the series so far, with the 2014 Godzilla and last year’s Kong: Skull Island each fairing respectably in terms of both commercial and critical success. Nonetheless, King of the Monsters is under some pressure for its role as a major stepping stone and potential hype-builder for 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, arguably the first true crossover moment for this still-young universe.
In any case, many of us will be pretty amped to finally see some footage of the scaly Kaiju clashing with some old foes, from Mothra to King Ghidorah. If we don’t get that at SDCC, then at the very least we’ll see some colossal action when Godzilla: King of the Monsters arrives in cinemas on May 31st, 2019.
