It didn’t come as a surprise when Marvel announced a Doctor Strange sequel as part of Phase 4 last month at Comic-Con. However, we weren’t expecting it to be revealed that Elizabeth Olsen will co-lead the movie alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as Scarlet Witch. And going by the title, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see the two magicians traveling through alternate dimensions.
Because the pair are both Avengers, we’re just assuming that they’ll be allies in the film. However, what if Wanda Maximoff actually serves more of an antagonistic role in DS2? What if she’s not helping Strange solve whatever threat there is to the multiverse but instead is that very threat? This is the intriguing theory put forward by ScreenRant, and there’s a lot of evidence to suggest that it’s a genuine possibility.
First of all, it’s been confirmed that Multiverse of Madness will follow directly on from WandaVision. The Disney Plus show is set to see Scarlet Witch and Vision living a happy life in some kind of idyllic 50s-esque neighborhood. Given that the android was still dead by the end of Avengers: Endgame, fans are fully expecting the series to bring Wanda’s reality-warping powers into the MCU. And when she starts changing reality in the comics, things never end well.
Scarlet Witch has a history of mental instability, too, with her enormous powerset pushing her over the edge in multiple storylines – notably “Avengers Disassembled” and “House of M.” The latter of which Olsen is a big fan of and would like to tackle in the MCU. So, what if the fake reality she creates in WandaVision slowly breaks down across the show, leaving her broken herself in DS2? There may even be a clue to Wanda’s breakdown in the last word of the film’s title.
What do you think, though? Could this theory be onto something? Let us know what you expect to happen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the comments section below.
