With The Avengers opening in theatres tomorrow, many fans have flocked to websites to read reviews. The majority of the superhero extravaganza’s reviews are positive, earning it a 93 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, New York Times writer A.O. Scott had something different to say in his review. While Scott gave director Joss Whedon credit where credit was due, he ultimately concluded the following.
“While The Avengers is hardly worth raging about, its failures are significant and dispiriting. The light, amusing bits cannot overcome the grinding, hectic emptiness, the bloated cynicism that is less a shortcoming of this particular film than a feature of the genre.”
While such words are expected to not sit well with fans, they also failed to sit well Samuel L. Jackson, who tweeted:
“#Avengers fans, NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let’s help him find one! One he can ACTUALLY do!”
The war of wits did not stop there, unfortunately. Jackson and Scott have continued to trade words via Twitter. These are not the only words being exchanged on Twitter by Jackson about the feature film right now either. Jackson even took the time to respond to another Twitter user who took Scott’s side.
@TheFilmNest: “Disappointed to hear @SamuelLJackson respond irrationally to negative review of #Avengers. People aren’t entitled to their own opinion?”
@SamuelLJackson: “That is My Opinion! @TheFilmNest & what’s irrational about it? They aren’t going to fire his jaundiced ass & You & I Know It!”
In response to this ongoing battle, Scott replied simply with “Jaundiced?” and has re-tweeted other words of support for his review from various critics.
The film has already dominated overseas, earning over $280 million in merely a week’s time according to THR. Regardless of any reviews, die-hard fans will flock to the theaters this weekend to see this team of superheros finally assemble on the big screen. In fact, it is estimated that the film will gross at least $150 million during its North American opening weekend.
Hopefully, the current word exchange will end soon rather than later.
