We already know that Hugh Jackman’s days as Wolverine are numbered, with the actor having confirmed that he’ll don the adamantium claws one last time for James Mangold’s upcoming third Wolverine film. Now, though, Ryan Reynolds is raising a very interesting possibility – that the cigar-chomping mutant could also pop up, albeit in a small role, in Deadpool.
Speaking with News.com.au, Reynolds certainly seemed open to the possibility that Jackman’s fan favorite X-Man could appear in some form:
“God I hope so, that would be really nice. I dunno, we’ll see. It seems like he’s open to it, but it’s gonna be more of a scheduling issue than anything else.”
This wouldn’t be the first time that the characters came head to head – a creatively castrated version of the Merc with a Mouth faced off with Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. A cameo could be Jackman’s chance to set things right, however, supporting the character in a solo film that actually gets the politically incorrect appeal of the comic-book vigilante spot-on.
Of course, we’ll take any Wolverine we can get at this point. The character is expected to play some kind of role in X-Men: Apoalypse, though Jackman hasn’t been confirmed for that, but come 2017, the actor will be exiting the role permanently, leaving a void in the heart of comic-book fans everywhere. It’s going to be a long hard goodbye, especially because Jackman is so irrevocably tied to the role that we can’t imagine Fox trying to recast it at least until 2020.
Deadpool may already be too jam-packed, though. In addition to Reynolds as the titular character, the Tim Miller-directed pic stars Morena Baccarin as Copycat, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Ed Skrein as Ajax and Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, meaning the film’s comic-book credentials are well and truly accounted for.
We’ll find out whether Wolverine could enter the fray well before the pic hits theaters, but Deadpool officially arrives on February 12, 2016.
