Though Once Upon a Deadpool’s two-week run in cinemas drew to a close last month, the PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 will be making a speedy transition to home video release, with the film coming to Blu-Ray and digital in less than two weeks.
The announcement comes to us via an Instagram post from Ryan Reynolds, whose message also makes the target audience for this family-friendly outing very clear:
“The movie your kids want to watch without your permission. Now with your permission. Get #OnceUponADeadpool in glorious PG-13 on Blu-ray and Digital January 15”
Reynolds’ post comes with a pair of images as well, one of which sees the Merc with a Mouth resting his head on Fred Savage’s leg while the Princess Bride co-star reads him the story of the film, while the other shows Wade Wilson posing as part of a festive family photo.
Ever since the project was first announced, the PG-13 re-release of Deadpool 2 has continued to draw criticism from fans who feel that a Deadpool movie without violence or swearing is no Deadpool movie at all, with the film receiving mixed reviews when it arrived in theaters.
Nonetheless, the work certainly has its defenders, among whom is the Merc’s own co-creator Rob Liefeld, who argued back in November that the new cut is “one of the most daring and insane outings this series has seen.” Actress Zazie Beetz, meanwhile, seemed to sympathize with the idea of a family-friendly Deadpool 2 when she remarked at ACE Comic Con last year that her 11-year-old brother still hadn’t been allowed to watch the original cut.
If you too see the appeal in a PG-13 Wade Wilson flick, then you can catch Once Upon a Deadpool on Blu-Ray and digital from January 15th. After that, the Merc should be back to his old R-rated self in the upcoming X-Force.
