The Wrap is reporting tonight that for his next project, Ryan Gosling will be heading back in front of the camera, as the actor/director has signed on to star in Guillermo del Toro’s Haunted Mansion. An adaptation of the popular Disneyland attraction, the live-action horror film will be shot in 3D and set in “a heightened reality, which is super designed and incredibly innovative, both narratively and visually.”
Del Toro first announced the project back in 2010, so it’s been a long time coming, and with a leading man now set, I would imagine that production will get underway in the near future. With Gosling on board, the studio shouldn’t have too much trouble filling out the rest of the cast in a timely fashion.
Details on the plot are scarce, which means that the actor’s role is currently unknown. All we can say for sure is that the film will feature the titular mansion and presumably, incorporate some supernatural elements. Given del Toro’s love of all things gothic and macabre, this project sounds right up his alley and with a leading man like Gosling now booked, we have a lot to be confident about here.
That being said, don’t expect anything too extreme when it comes to the horror, as the director has stated his intention to make the film scary, but keep it “fun scary”:
“It’s going to be scary. Hopefully it will be fun scary, rather than funny scary. It’s going to be fun but the idea is to make it scary like when you go through the ride as the kid — part of you is charmed and part of you wants to get out of there,” he told Indiewire 2013.
We’ll keep you posted as more on Haunted Mansion arises, but for now, tell us, are you excited to see Ryan Gosling teaming up with Guillermo del Toro?
