As promised, the first teaser trailer for Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2: Berandal has roared onto the internet a little earlier than expected. courtesy of Twitch. The brief, visceral sizzle reel is our first glimpse of the Welsh filmmaker’s sequel to 2011’s The Raid: Redemption, which will see him reunite with Indonesian star Iko Uwais for more cringe-inducing action.

Here’s the trailer in all of its intriguing glory:

Picking up precisely where its predecessor left off, The Raid 2: Berandal will follow our vigorous protagonist Rama as he goes undercover in order to infiltrate a ruthless Indonesian crime syndicate. In the footage, Uwais’ character is confined to a prison cell, honing his skills against a chalk figure in a similar fashion to Oh Dae-Su from Oldboy. The plot itself is set to expand upon the simple premise of its predecessor —which took place within the claustrophobic corridors of an ailing apartment building—with the all-new trailer hinting towards some of the new locales and fresh, yet terrifying characters.

That said, not all of these faces are brand new. Yayan Ruhian and Tegar Satrya’s Bowo, for instance, will both reprise their roles in the hyper-violent sequel. Moreover, the snippet also hints towards some of the larger set pieces, with cutaways to a car sequence and an Indonesian shopping complex all included to add an extra sense of intrigue to the distinctive action.

The follow-up to Gareth Evans’ stylish debut, which was recently granted a theatrical release in North America through a partnership with Sony Pictures, is set to hit the big screen sometime in 2014. In the meantime, though, be sure to check out the trailer and let us know your early impressions of The Raid 2: Berandal in the comments section.
